Foundations of Aggregation in Deductive Databases
نویسنده
چکیده
As a foundation for providing semantics for aggregation within recursion, the structure of subsets of partially ordered domains is studied. We argue that the underlying cause of many of the di culties encountered in extending deductive database semantics to include aggregation is that set construction does not preserve the structure of the underlying domain very well. We study a binary relation < that is stronger than the standard , contrasting its properties on domains with di ering amounts of structure. An analogous is de ned that is more appropriate than < for minimization problems. A class of aggregate functions, based on structural recursion, is de ned formally. Proposed language constructs permit users to de ne their own interpreted functions and aggregates. Several relational algebra operations are not monotonic w.r.t.<. To overcome this problem, unfolding is proposed to \bury" the nonmonotonic operations inside aggregation.

Update Control in Deductive Object Bases1
Deductive object bases are a combination of both deductive and objectoriented databases. This dissertation investigates the problem of update control for such databases. The data model is defined as an extreme case of a deductive database with only one extensional predicate and a multitude of axioms defining the object-oriented abstraction concepts. The advantages are twofold: a distinct concep...
متن کاملAggregation in Disjunctive Deductive Databases
Practical applications of deductive databases often require the use of extended features like disjunctive information, aggregation operators or default negation. But it has been unclear how one could deal with aggregation in the presense of recursion and disjunction. Usually , there is the requirement that deductive databases must be stratiied w.r.t. aggregation, i.e. a predicate q that is deen...
متن کاملFoundations of Deductive Databases and Logic Programming
Preparing the books to read every day is enjoyable for many people. However, there are still many people who also don't like reading. This is a problem. But, when you can support others to start reading, it will be better. One of the books that can be recommended for new readers is foundations of deductive databases and logic programming. This book is not kind of difficult book to read. It can ...
متن کاملSemantic foundations for the view update problem
We present a declarative framework for updating views over indefinite databases, that is, databases with null values. The framework follows the standard database approach, which allows for a unique null constant. As the main contributions of the paper, we introduce the concept of an indefinite deductive database as a formal representation of a view over an indefinite database, propose a semanti...
متن کاملAn Axiomatic Model for Deductive Object-Oriented Databases
Databases with both object-oriented and deductive features (DOOD) seem to be the most promising database technology. There are successful approaches to designing such systems. However, the resulting systems, in our opinion, still lack several important properties of fullfeatured DOOD’s. Realizing that some practical problems cannot be tackled with the former implementations, we reconsidered the...
